Friendship Bracelets – Basic Knots

The Basic Knots

Technically there are only 2 knots. A foreward knot and a backward knot.
Which is great. You only need to memorize 2 knots!

Each “knot” (one of the bumps) in a friendship bracelet consists of 2 of the knot types. The first knot determines the possition of the knot and the second knot locks it in place. So the tighter you tie the first knot the closer to the last row/knot your new knot will be.

If you are moving a string color from the left to the right you will be doing a foreward knot.
If you are moving the string color from right to left you will be doing a backward knot.
If the string color stays in the same place you will make a foreward backward knot, or backward foreward knot with whichever string is the color of the knot needed for the pattern.

Foreward Knot

A foreward knot is created by bringing your knotting string over your next string on the right and creating the shape of a “4”.

Then reach through the loop and pull the knotting string up through that loop.

Then you pull that string all the way up to the top creating one half of a foreward knot.

Then just repeat those steps again to finish the second part of this knot.

Backward Knot

A backward knot is created by bringing your knotting string over your next string on the left and creating the shape of a capital “P”.

Then reach through the loop and pull the knotting string up through that loop.

Then you pull that string all the way up to the top creating one half of a foreward knot.

Then just repeat those steps again to finish the second part of this knot.

Foreward Backward & Backward Foreward Knot

A foreward backward knot is created by making one half of a foreward knot and one half of a backward knot.
And as you would have guessed, a backward foreward knot is created by making one half of a backward knot and one half of a foreward knot.
